Description: | In this Hugh Walpole novel, the main character Hjalmar Johanson (Harmer John), is a Nordic body builder who has studied art in Italy. He comes to the town of Polchester, attracted by the town’s cathedral, and sets to transforming the town with his ideas on how to make the town more beautiful. He wants to tear down slums and rebuild. He sets up a gymnasium with the aim of making people healthier and happier and then uses that as a springboard into acceptance. However, he did not wait to be accepted before putting forward his ideas, and the townspeople rejected his beautification plans, mainly because he was a “foreigner”. Ultimately, his ideas were accepted, but it was too late for him. [Suggest a different description.] |
